Self-Assessment Questionnaire

This questionnaire is designed for handing out to history majors as they enter the program and for graduating seniors to fill out at the completion of their study.

 

Graduating Seniors: The History Department would like to know your opinions on how our program has served your needs.† Please write out your answers to the topics listed below.† It is especially useful to know specific information about the aspects of our program that the questions address.† Whenever possible, try to provide specific examples of the assignments, exercises, or experiences in relation to the learning objectives listed in section 1.

Section II:† General Comments

 

Our department believes that by following the guidelines of our undergraduate program our graduating majors will have learned specific skills and developed a range of abilities that will serve them in any endeavor.† Briefly, explain how well you think your experience as a History major at Cal Poly Pomona helped you develop your skills and abilities in these five areas:

 

  1. Appreciate and evaluate the quality of arguments and the evidence that scholars and others present in support of their arguments.
  2. Choose a topic of interest, design a program of research, conduct the needed investigation through a reading and review of appropriate secondary texts and primary sources, produce a formal essay that reports oneís conclusions, and present their findings in a seminar or conference setting.
  3. Study independently and prepare arguments, supported by evidence that they have gathered, that address issues of interest and/or concern.
  4. Develop a sense of personal ethics, responsibility, and accountability, and reflect upon and refine their sense of self as an individual, as a citizen, and as a member of a wider community.
  5. Gain awareness of their own connection to regional, national, global, and historical communities that helped define and that continue to shape their lives.
