Thanks for visiting my site.
For those of you interested in knowing more about my background, I have been at Cal Poly University, Pomona, since June, 1969. Previously, I taught at Arizona State University and in the Chicago Public Schools. I earned BS in Business and MBA (Economics) degrees from DePaul University, Chicago, and my Doctorate in Business Education from Arizona State University, Tempe.
I am currently Professor Emeritus of Management and Human Resources at Cal Poly, where I have taught
numerous management courses and served in a variety of administrative positions, including: Director of Graduate Business Programs; Chair, Business Management Department, and Chair, Management and Human Resources Department; Associate
Director, Small Business Development Center; and, Director, Small Business Institute.
You may have noticed the word Emeritus in my title. Just what is a Professor Emeritus?
After long years of service and contributions to an institution, a person may choose to retire and still be retained on the rolls as a professor emeritus with certain benefits and privileges.
In my case, I chose to retire early to enjoy life more while continuing to teach on a Faculty Early Retirement Program in which I will teach each Fall Quarter through 2001.
This approach appeals to me because it allows me to continue to keep in touch with the educational process and students while allowing additional time for travel and other pursuits.
I have quite a bit of experience in business, consulting, curriculum and materials development, and instructional improvement.
One interesting experience is that of on-site consultant to the Ministry of National Education in Greece in course, facility, and equipment planning and the development of curricular materials for the Schools of Business Management Technology for the Higher Technical Education Centers (KATE). I was President of an audio-visual production
company in which we produced and marketed educational materials, and currently own a graphic communications company specializing in instructional media for business and education. I've worked with a number of corporations in management training and consulting, including systems analysis of various processes.
In the area of the role of design in business, in recent years I've attended numerous symposia on design, sponsored by the Corporate Design Foundation and the Design Management Institute, and am helping to promote our new American Business Center of Design. I served as a core faculty member on a recent NEA grant, "Design, Total Quality Management and Entrepreneurship: An Integrative Course in Applied Creativity."
Included in the numerous management and entrepreneurship courses I've taught are: Organizational Management, Theory and Behavior; Problems of Small Business; Seminar in New Venture Creation; Organizational Communications; Administrative Management; and, Support Systems Administration. A few years ago I introduced a new course, Advanced Communication for Management, the goal of which was to integrate design principles and applications too improve communication quality and to allow more in-depth coverage of communication skills and knowledge, including advanced uses of computers and design. This course has migrated to the web as a growing source for management communication.
My current research interests include the design and use of interactive
communication technologies and related human-factors issues affecting quality in the workplace. My research has included integration of interactive video applications and research into the curriculum (electronic mail, videoconferencing, etc.), their unique characteristics for affecting quality in communication processes, and their diffusion (adoption, acceptance, use, and effectiveness) into the workplace.
My interest in and knowledge of the design of communications technologies has led to involving students in the use of a variety of computer-based tools (interactive video, voice mail, the internet, CD-ROM databases, interactive video) and videography for active and interactive learning.
