VIII. THEME FOUR: NEW DIRECTIONS
Teaching/Research/Service Outreach Partnerships

Research/Service Outreach Partnerships

Partnerships with Industry

Theme Four, "New Directions" introduces a variety of recent campus directions, which -- as the reader will see -- are articulated via a variety of sometimes conflicting ideologies, aims, and sets of assumptions. The analytic model introduced in this theme responds to the diversity of intents and perspectives noted in previous chapters; it also provides an examination of the purposes, claims, and cultural assumptions of some of these newer initiatives. The existing (and needed) campus policy on these matters will also be explored. Strongest among the university’s new directions are:

  • Outreach to Schools (A)
  • Community Partnerships Focusing on Service-Learning (B)
  • Domestic Student Exchanges (C)
  • Internationalization (D)
  • Seeking Advice and Assistance from Community Partners (E)
  • Research/Service Outreach Partnerships (E)
  • Partnerships with Industry (E)
  • Participation in larger Educational Organizations (F)

Thus, after the introductory sections, the Theme Four chapter is organized under these headings, with an additional section to reprise its recommendations. These new directions have in common the expansion of the definition of ourselves and our educational behavior to include other communities — reaching out. Another new direction of great importance to the campus is (learning outcomes) assessment and accountability (G); some of this has been covered in Themes One and Two. The larger context of assessment, accountability, while not new in itself, is new as a significant initiative and debate on the campus, and is discussed at the end of this chapter. Additionally, changes in management and budgeting are covered in Themes One and Three, and the impact of changes in technology is addressed in the other themes. This chapter deals with new directions, such as the above, not examined elsewhere. We also propose herein a new vision for the university derived from our polytechnic identity.
