Charge for the Educational Effectiveness Sub-Committee

(Revised 11/3/08)

1. The Special Themes model will be used for the Educational Effectiveness Report. The subcommittee will assist the Steering Committee in interpreting, clarifying, and refining: the topics for review, the areas of inquiry or researchable questions, and the methodology for engaging each topic.

2. Coordinate with the Capacity and Preparatory Review Subcommittee (CPRS), taking into account CPRS's identification of capacity-related issues that impact the Educational Effectiveness Review and assessment of readiness to undertake the Educational Effectiveness Review.

3. Work in conjunction with the Steering Committee to define timelines and action steps for the completion of the Educational Effectiveness Review that meet the overall timing of the University's WASC accreditation process.

4. Prepare and submit drafts of the Educational Effectiveness Report to the Steering Committee for review.

5. In preparing the draft Educational Effectiveness Report, the subcommittee, through consultation with the Steering Committee and other appropriate stakeholders, assures that the following are addressed:

  • review of the design and results of institutional efforts to evaluate effectiveness of educational programs;
  • examination of institutional practices for evaluating student learning;
  • development and sharing of good practices in using educational results to improve the process of teaching and learning;
  • examination of the alignment of institutional resources with activities designed to achieve the institution's educational objectives; and
  • Promotion of sustained engagement with selected issues of Educational Effectiveness consistent with Commission Standards and identified and approved through the Proposal Review Process.

6. With the assistance of the Steering Committee, assure that the Faculty is deeply involved in the design and implementation of the Educational Effectiveness Report and review process, as well as others at the institution connected to issues of Educational Effectiveness.

7. When the Commission submits its team report to Cal Poly Pomona for comment before it is finalized, the subcommittee will assist the Steering Committee in the review and input process, assuring that representative university-wide comment is received.

8. Coordinate with the Steering Committee the preparation of a formal written statement by Cal Poly Pomona in response to the final report.

Winter and Spring 2007

  • Develop plan for disseminating university learning outcomes
  • Group the 13 university learning outcomes together into 4-5 easy-to-use categories
  • Develop plan for campus-wide educational effectiveness showcase, February 2008
  • Participate in WASC annual meeting to further develop understanding of WASC process and educational effectiveness concept

Summer 2007

  • Begin to implement plans for educational effectiveness showcase
  • Develop and submit budget request

Fall 2007

  • Implement plan for dissemination of university learning outcomes
  • Initiate campus-wide discussion and feedback on groupings of university learning outcomes
  • Contribute to programs (Fall Conference, Faculty Center, etc.) to increase understanding of educational effectiveness concept
  • Contribute to programs (Fall Conference, Faculty Center, etc.) to promote participation in educational effectiveness showcase
  • Revise timeline and establish goals for 2007-08

Winter and Spring 2008

  • Participate in educational effectiveness showcase
  • Assess educational effectiveness showcase
  • Provide input to C&PR committee for report
  • Participate in WASC annual meeting
  • Review Questions for Institutional Engagement and Criteria for Review
