Connectivity for the Proposed El Monte Transit Village
URP 498 Advanced Planning Studio, Summer 2005
Instructor: Rick Zimmer

Students examined opportunities for linking the existing El Monte Transit Station and the proposed El Monte Transit Village with the surrounding communities. The El Monte Transit Center is a unique, high volume transit transfer center linked to downtown Los Angeles by busway. The El Monte Transit Village is a proposal for a mixed use development including open space, housing, offices, retail and an expanded busway facility.

Working in teams, the student examined particular access modes, such as walking, biking, and transit. They also examined strategies to link the transit center to the Flair Park office complex, Valley Mall, and residential neighborhoods. The project received financial support from the Titan Group, LLC the proposed developer of the El Monte Transit Village and technical assistance from the City of El Monte.

The images below show the final presentation, held August 31, 2005. Over 35 residents and city officials attended, heard the students’ presentation, and provided comments and feedback.

Identity and Development of a Metropolitan Territory with High Scientific Competitiveness
Cergy-Pontoise, France, August/September 2005

URP graduate Student Raeanon Hartigan's participation in an international program

Reanon was on "Team A", which won the Grand Prize with their plan, "The Ring of Knowledge". The four week workshop included a first week in which each student made a 15 minute presentation about a metropolitan territory with high scientific competitiveness from their part of the world. Reanon presented Silicon Valley. The following week they toured the territory in question--The Saclay St Quentin Plateau, and met with representatives from various high tech companies, universities, stakeholder groups, and local and regional government. They also attended lectures and presentations by various experts. The last two weeks they worked in multidisciplinary teams of 5-6 to put together their plans. Each week they presented their progress to the experts/jury members and other teams, where they asked questions and provided criticism. The third and final presentation was given to an audience of experts, jury members, and various representatives. Prizes were announced the following day. The jury felt that their plan was the most realistic and sensitive to existing infrastructure.
