... in an Era of Resource Constraints and Climate Change
Challenges associated with resource constraints and climate change require planners to critically evaluate their assumptions about the future of California’s communities and regions. Some see a transformation toward a mixed-use, urban model where location advantages are paramount, while others contend that outlying areas will adapt and prosper. So much is changing, however, that unprecedented new forms may emerge. What does the resource-constrained future hold for California’s communities and regions, and how can planners proactively shape that future?
On February 4th, 2009, Dale Prize Practitioner S. Gail Goldberg and Dale Prize Scholar Stephen M. Wheeler led a stimulating discussion about the urgency for change and how change can be accomplished at the local level.
Goldberg was appointed Director of Planning for the City of Los Angeles in 2006. Ms. Goldberg has advanced Mayor Villaraigosa’s vision of sustainable development by energizing the Planning Department and advancing an aggressive new program of community plans. Previously, she was Director of Planning for the City of San Diego. She has extensive experience in long range city-wide and community planning, multiple species conservation programs, and infrastructure. Ms. Goldberg holds a degree in Urban Studies and Planning from the University of California San Diego. She is an Urban Land Institute Trustee and a member of the California Planners Roundtable.
Wheeler joined the Landscape Architecture Program, Department of Environmental Design, University of California in January 2007. He previously taught in the Community and Regional Planning Program at the University of New Mexico and the University of California at Berkeley, where he received his Ph.D. and Master of City Planning degrees. Dr. Wheeler is the author of two books, Planning for Sustainability: Towards Livable, Equitable, and Ecological Communities and The Sustainable Urban Development Reader (co-edited with Tim Beatley, two editions) as well as numerous journal articles.
