Welcome to Geography 345!

This course is an introduction to the geography of travel and tourism. In it, you will learn about the growth and impact of tourism in both the United States and abroad. Many experts consider tourism to be world’s largest industry, making it one of the most significant forces for social, economic and environmental change in our globalizing world. Cities and regions in the U.S., Europe, and many developing countries are increasingly turning to tourism as a route to economic growth. Tourism has obvious economic, social and political benefits since it earns foreign exchange and increases international contacts. Travel for the individual can be enlightening and entertaining. However, tourism, especially international tourism, also has costs for the destination country. The diversion of scarce resources, the commercialization of local cultures, and environmental degradation are frequent corollaries to tourism in developing countries.
