Hello, I'm Terry Simmons, a technician here in the Media Distribution department at Cal Poly Pomona (actually California State Polytechnic University, Pomona). Media Distribution (in the old days it was just plain Audio Visual) is responsible for providing audiovisual, computing and technical support for the entire campus community. My job is to oversee all technical aspects of the Media Distribution operation, supervise the staff of delivery student assistants, solve classroom technical issues and assist faculty in providing a quality education here at Cal Poly. Additionally, I provide sound systems for most of the major events on campus. This web page is designed to give a little of my background. If you have any questions, please contact me.

I was very proud to be named by the Cal Poly Staff Council as one of the Outstanding Staff Members for 2002. This is a great honor and I promise that I will do my best to maintain the standards associated with this award.

  • I was born in Riverside California, back near the middle of last century.
  • I've got a degree in Communications, with a television production specialty from Cal State, Fullerton
Before coming to Cal Poly, I was......
an airline pilot for United Express/WestAir Airlines
a flight instructor for AFI (a great place to learn to fly) at Fullerton, CA airport
an avionics technician at Fullerton airport.
a concert sound engineer, audiovisual and video technician, operations manager and stuff like that for McCune Sound.
a Disneyland "host" (yes, my University of Disneyland training still stays with me, "you're not an employee, you're a host to our guests") while going to college.
and before that, I stocked ice vending machines, was a paper boy and my favorite, at 12 years old, worked for Street Treats pedaling a 150 lb ice cream wagon around Santa Ana and Tustin for eight hours a day making upwards of $2/day (and then I showed up for work one day and no one was there, I have a feeling they were closed down due to violations of child labor laws).
Things I like to do when I'm not working include......
bicycling. It's my way to attempt to stay in shape and I really enjoy riding my mountain bike and exploring the wilderness. In 1986, I bicycled across the US. You can click the above link for details on that journey.
camping. When the kids were younger, it was our goal to camp at least once a month and for eight years, we did it about 10 months out of the year. The kids are older and busier now, so we don't get out quite as often, but I feel it's the best family experience imaginable!

  Profile for TrekNTerry

geocaching. Geocaching is electronic treasure hunting and it's taken me to many fascinating places that I've never been before. There are over 800,000 geocaches around the world, thousands of which are in Southern California including many right here at Cal Poly.
building Halloween props. I like creating electro/pneumatic/mechanical devices, designing circuits and just having fun. And yes, I will answer to the name "Scary Terry".
working around the house. I enjoy building furniture and other things for the house, gardening and just general tinkering.
