In the story " Handling Charges" by Ghita Orth, the character of Jeff is ill with a diease which seems to be extremely serious. The mother, Tova has completel control over her son, she tries hard to make sure he is comfortable at the doctor's, and she makes sure that he is distracted when they walk by the park . It isn't until the carousel, did Jeff seem to have a choice. He chose the Black horse. And it is at that point that Tova allows him this chose and supports him to it. Black also symbolizes darkness or death and it is also clear with statement, " her son high to back of the black horse that rode up and down and never away" seems to imply that she is confident that particular black horse will not take her son away from her.
