I like your contrast about the color black and the horse. I feel that that is a good assumption. It is possible that Orth is comparing the color black with death. I like this idea but I don't find it to be much of a correlation with the disease myself.
Why is she so hesitant about it, it's almost like she is ashamed of the fact. When she lies about her sons disease it gets me a little pissed off. How can any mother lie about such a serious matter. I like the point you brought up about her not wanting any problems with the other women. She cold have been a nuisance for Tova and her son.
