I, too, think that the mother is in denial about her son's illness. I thought that it was sad for the mother to lie to the lady about her son's scars. Also, I totally saw the symbolism of the "black" horse. I think it symbolizes death, too. I feel sad for the mom. Her poor son is dying and she can't do a thing about it.
