I can see where you get the idea about it being a confession, but I would hope that the narrator's was not the role of a priest since he is telling the story to all of us. I thought that the story was told this way because the narrator could do a better job of telling it, by adding descriptions, than what Michelle did originally. Also, it is a very interesting story that deserved to be repeated, and since Michelle swore never to tell it again, the narrator had to do it for her.
