I think I understand what you are saying, Huddle wants Michelle's story to be told through the narrator's recollection of the story that was told to him. I agree that this is the way it was told. I believe that it was told this way because Michelle was too shy to tell her story herself. I also felt it was necessary to tell it this way to emphasize the details of the story, the darkness, the sounds, etc. Michelle probably did not focus as heavily on these when she told the story as the narrator does in his recounting of it.
