Hannah characterized the narrator as a lazy man. In the first two paragraphs alone you can tell that this guy is lazy. The narrator has no ambition at all. He bought a croquet set at Penney's and then the first time playing with it, he got bored with it and gave it up. The only thing the narrator talks about is his wife because she's the only one that does something in or outside the house. She's very ambitious and tries a lot of new things like flying a plane. Unlike her husband the narrator who just sits around and smoke his cigarette and drinks his beer. He mentions that he goes out to look for a job but nothing happens. Maybe this is the reason his been divorced twice.
