The black horse represents Jeff as being the black sheep out of healthy other children. It represents a life of gloominess and sacrifice for Tova. It is the never-ending disease that "bounces up and down but never goes away." It is ever abounding in pain and pity from others, while the horse itself lies innocent of the matter. It is a wooden object that rides and goes about his duty not realizing how different he is from the rest of the world.
