African American Contemporary Issues

Final Paper Description

Research Position Paper on a Contemporary Issue

Select an issue for research in one of the following areas:  education, health, politics, crime and justice, race relations, and affirmative action.  You must show how your topic is a contemporary issue in the African American community.  This assignment requires you to go beyond a mere description of the content of your readings. Your paper should be from five to seven, double-spaced, typed pages.  Your paper must be a carefully developed analysis of the issue based on a literature review and YOUR reasoned position or perspective on the topic.   In this paper, you should demonstrate knowledge of course concepts and include the following points:

1.

Introduction—historical overview of importance of issue;

 

2.

Analysis of the problem or issue through…

a. Perspectives on the topic through a review of the literature

Include in review references to course texts;

 

b. You may include charts, illustrations, etc.

 

3.

Your position with supporting documentation;

 

4.

Include at least three references to course texts as support for your position.

 

5.

Conclusions

a.   Relevance of issue for the African Diaspora Communities;

 

b.    Significance of your research and findings for Ethnic and Women’s Studies.

 

Due December 4

 

Your paper must

1.

be typed/word processed and double spaced;

 

2.

have 12-point font and one inch margins maximum;

 

3.

have a title page;

 

4.

cite five scholarly references other than course texts and materials. Use no more than 3 Internet sources.

 

5.

have a reference list.  Not included in 5-7 page requirement;

 

6.

have numbered pages.

 

Two points will be deducted for each item missing from your paper.

 

Do not put paper in a folder.

In addressing each of the above points precisely and specifically, you may also use materials from newspapers, magazines, journals, texts, or other sources.  You can cite any documentaries or films you have viewed. All facts from any source must be documented within your text, and the appropriate citation must be on your reference page

Points to Remember

Your paper should be clearly written, focused and relatively free of grammatical, punctuation, and typing errors.

Grades for papers without citations and reference list begin at C.

 

I will accept final papers only from those who attend class the day they are due.

Do not use you, your, yourself, yourselves.         Know the differences between then, than, and that; there and their.

Know the difference between descent and decent.

 

THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN WRITING PAPERS

RULES FOR WRITING GOOD

Each pronoun agrees with their antecedent.

Verbs has to agree with their subjects.

Don’t use no double negatives.

A writer mustn’t shift your point of view.

Don’t use a run-on sentence you got to punctuate it.

About sentence fragments.

Don’t use commas, which aren’t necessary.

Don’t abbrev.

Check to see if you any words out.

Never use a preposition to end a sentence with.

Use apostrophe’s right.

Last but not least, lay off cliches

 

RULES FOR WRITERS

About them sentence fragments.

Just between you and I, case is important too.

Don’t write run-on sentences they are hard to read.

Try to not split infinitives.

Its important to use your apostrophe’s correctly.

Proofread your writing to see if you any words out.

Correct spelling is absolutely esential.
