African American Contemporary Issues

Evaluation Outcomes

Evaluation of student performance will adhere to but is not limited to the following guidelines:

1.

Attendance/Participation

Reflection Papers

a. Write reflection papers of readings, videos, and topics discussed in class.

 
 

b. Points will be deducted for papers not submitted the week they are due and for responses that are too brief, carelessly written, and/or show lack of critical thought.

 

 

4.

Midterm

25%

  Submit a 4-5 page paper.   
 

Due October 23.

 

 

5.

Documentary Review      

10%

 

Review one documentary (video, DVD, PBS Special, History Channel) from one of the following categories relevant to the culture, history, struggles and triumphs of Africans in the Americas in the 20th and/or 21st Century:

 
 

a.   an influential person(s)

 
 

b.   a significant event

 
 

c.   a significant movement

 
 

d.   significant legislation

Cultural Experiences

10%

 

a.  Participate in one of the following:                                        

 
 

1) Multicultural Tour of Los Angeles October 20

 

2) 9th Annual Pow Wow: November 17

 

3) CPP Kwanzaa Observance: November 29

 

4)  Visit a relevant African/African American cultural site., e.g. talks on African/African American history/issues, cultural performances, museums, etc. 

Reflection paper due December 5.

 

b. You must include proof of attendance for this event.

 

 

c.   Sign and date reflection papers.

a. Course Paper

5-7 pages with at least four references other than course texts.
