Introduction to Ethnic Studies

Evaluation Outcomes

Evaluation of student performance will adhere to but is not limited to the following guidelines:

1.

Attendance/Participation

 

10%

2.

 Reflection Paper

Write reflections relevant course readings and experiences.

10%

 

 

 

3. Autobiography and Group Presentation:  Who Am I?/Who Are We?    10%
 

a. Submit a 3-page text of the autobiographical account of your life.  Due October 18.

 
  b. Each group will present the life stories of its group members. October 18

4.

The Matrix of Privilege and Domination (MOPaD) Model

10%
 

a.   Use text readings and class discussions to create a model of The Martrix of Privilege and Domination. 

 
  b.   Include a one-two page explanation of the concept.

Cultural Experiences

 
  a. Participate in one off-campus event and one on-campus event or two off-campus events.  10%
 

1) You must include proof of attendance from these events.   

 

 

b.   Service Learning:

10%
 

1) Volunteer for one cultural center event on campus.                        

 

 

2) The center you select must be different from your own racial/ethnic/ gender identification group.

 

3) The Service Learning Form must be signed by the center coordinator.

 

     
 

c. Cultural events to remember:

LGBT History Month,October;

Multicultural Tour of Los Angeles,October 20;

Dia de los Muertos, November 1;

Cal Poly Pomona 9th Annual Pow Wow, November 17;

 University Kwanzaa Observance, November 29.

 
 

d.   Write a one-page reflection paper for each cultural experience. 

Reflections due December 4.

 
6.

Issue Presentations                                          

10%
 

a. Present a 5-minute video commercial/ advertisement/public service announcement of a critical issue relevant to Ethnic and Women’s Studies.

7. Final Paper:  Issue relevant to Ethnic and Women’s Studies 30%
  a. 4-6 pages with at least three references other than course texts.
