Introduction
This unit will focus on the contributions made by China and
continue to reinforce the framework by teaching the diverse qualities of
communities that explain the diverse quality of our own communities.
This is an integrated unit. The objective of this unit is to expose
students to the cultural roots of Asian-Americans in our community. By
focusing in on a particular country, although China has many cultures
within itself, I would like to try to move away from teaching Asia as a
single almost generic culture. Every activity includes a reading source.
There is no prescribed order for the following activities.

It is important to cross off any inaccurate statements. The "crossing
off" of information should be done with discussion.
- Map of China
- Use the map found in this unit. Discuss, while using the overhead
how each region looks, the differences in climate, vegetation, and animal
life. Be sure to include information on its rivers mountains, monuments
cities and its deserts
- Another way to indicate historical and cultural events could be to
indicate where such things as the Great Wall originated, the Silk Road,
endangered species of flora and fauna. Together the maps will show how
different environments create different living conditions and as a result,
different cultures.
- Indicate where one can find the following list of places.
- Gobi Desert
- Himalayas
- Qomolongma, AKA Mt. Everest
- Yellow Sea
- Taklimakan Desert
- Huanq He River, AKA Yellow River
- Grand Canal
- Chanq Jianq, AKA Yangtze
- Quianghai, largest lake
- Beijinq, The capital, AKA Peking
- South China Sea
- Honq Kong
- Shanghai
- Great Wall
- Inner Mongolia
- Tibetan Plateau
- Yak, a mountain ox
- Sichuan
- Giant Panda
- Crane, marsh birds
- Gulf of Bo Hai
- Taiwan
- Hainan
- The First Pandas
- In this activity students read through the article.
- Students should set up a paper with a T-diagram. See below.
- Teachers should modify the number of places/things/people/etc. to be
listed in the T-diagram.

- Historical Background
- In this assignment the students read through the article and write any
numbers they find in the article and include the information that comes
with that number.
- Lines mall be added or deleted according to the information given.
- General information of China
- Students read the General Information of China then complete this
worksheet.
- Create a circle graph using the information of China's land use
- 10% Arable land
- 31% Meadows and Pastures
- 14% Forest and Woodland
- 45% Other
- 5% Irrigated
- Show the steps taken to solve the problem.
- Silk: Queen of Fabric
- Students read the article Silk: Queen of Fabric then write the vocabulary
words with its definition around a five-pointed-star according to people, places,
emotions, events, objects.
- The Living Fossil
- In this activity one will study the anatomy of the Ginkgo Biloba.
Label each part of the plant according to the dichotomous key. As an art
project, students may create any design, within taste in which the
Ginkgo Biloba is displayed.
- Designing the Great Wall
- In this activity you win use the math in motion activity to design
a box You will need both the top and bottom. This will visually
represent one block of the Great Wall. Together the blocks will build the
Great Wall in their classroom.
- Read The Great Wall of China by Marilyn Shea.
- Questions to answer
- Paper
- Length
- Width
- Parameter (L1+L2+W1+W2)
- Area of your paper. (LxW)
- Box
- Length
- Width
- Height
- Volume (Lenqth x Width x Height)
- Vertices
- Edges
- Faces
- Draw a three dimensional form of the block.
- Draw a diagram
- Lady Li has three pairs of brown sandals she can wear today: two strap,
three strap and four strap. She can wear any one of her four dresses with
any of the three pairs of sandals: a yellow dress, a red dress, a blue dress
and a green dress. How many different ways can Lady Li choose to wear her
sandals and dress today?
- Draw a diagram to solve this problem.
- Using a matrix
- Pat, Wei and Jing each have: a collection. One collects art, one fans, and
the other kites. The collector of fans showed Pat and Wei her collection of
fans on Saturday. Pat does not collect kites. Who collects each item?
- Use a matrix to solve this problem and then explain your results.
- Make a list
- Mrs. Wu bought four Chinese species of plants They are rhododendrons,
magnolias. camellias and gardenias. She wants to plant the bushes in a row
in front of he house In how many different ways can she arrange the
bushes in a row if she does not want to plant the rhododendrons next to
the jasmine?
- Proportional Reasoning
- Cost of Living Index for 1992
- Kashi -102
- Harbin - 91
- Lhasa - 97
- Sichuan - 96
- Anhui - 111
- The chart above gives the cost of living index for selected cities in
China. If it costs the Zhao family $2000 a month to live in Sichuan, how
much win it cost them to live in Anhui?
- You can use proportional reasoning to answer this question.
- Dessert List
- For dessert Chen had a choice of three toppings for anise or lemon ice
cream: apricots, peaches, oranges. How many different desserts could Chen
choose?
- Classify Information
- Some noteworthy events in the early history of China are listed below.
- 139 BC "Silk Road" - The world's longest highway was opened and stretched from Eastern China to the Mediterranean Sea. In addition to tangible commodities such as gold and jade, new ideas and religions also passed along this road.

- 1368 Ming dynasty begins - The time when the Great Wall took on its present form.
- 1644 End of Minq dynasty
- How many years before the Emperor Quin Shi Huang dies was the "Silk Road" founded?
- How many years did the Ming Dynasty rule?
- What information was needed and was not needed?
- Large numbers
- The projected world population and regional population for the year
2025 are given below. How would you read each of these numbers?
- You can use the place value chart to read the numbers.
- Projected Populations for 2025
- World total: 8,472,000,000
- Africa: 1,582,500,000
- Latin America: 701,600,000
- North America: 360,500,000
- Asia: 4,900,300,000
- Europe: 541,800,000
- Questions
- By the year 2025, what region will have the greatest population?
- Calculate 1/2 of the world's total population based on the 2025 projected population.
- Rank the regional population of 2025 in descending order by continent.
