Assigned Homework
These homework assignments may be included in your portfolio (optional).
Homework will be assigned as lectures proceed.  Check this page on Wednesday nights for new assignments.

HW 3: due date is 11-29-99
1- Mention two advantages and two disadvantages for Inductive Learning algorithms and Neural Network approaches.
2- Consider the case study on page 13 of Reference [18] (in your handout).  What is the input vector for pattern (b)?  Describe that experiment in your own words.
3-  In the following the weather conditions for two days are mentioned.  Explain if you will play tennis on each one of these days if the you the given decision trees. Mention any problems as well as assumptions that you make.
Monday: It is sunny, hot, with normal humidity
Tuesday: It is raining, cool, with weak wind
a) Consider the decision tree on page 53 of Reference [16].
b) Consider the bottom decision tree on page 14 of Reference [17].
4-  The backpropagation model assumes there is a human teacher who knows what are correct answers.  Why do we bother training a neural network when the answers are already known?

HW 2: due date is 11-1-99
1- Consider Class Notes 5 and the handouts in class:
a) Modify the Object Model on page 111 of the handout to fit the revised spreadsheet of DDT customers (in your handout).  Notice that some of the classes mentioned on page 111 are not relevant for the available information on spreadsheet.  Also specify objects related to each class.  For example, Janet Smith is an object of class "Dive & Boat Customers".
b) Select two of the terms in relation to Object-Oriented approach.  Write one paragraph explaining those terms and providing examples.  You can refer to any book in this area.

2- Find an article in relation to AI from a book, journal, or Internet.  The article can be about the concepts in AI or its application. Write a one page summary.  Include a copy of the source of your information.

3- Consider the example of the expert system for car diagnosis.  This example is on pages 8-10 of reference [6]. For more information you can refer to the Class Notes 7 (is uploaded now) and the handouts provided  in the class.
a) Assume the known facts (symptoms) about a car are "Headlights dim or dead", "Ignition key is on", and "Engine is not turning over".   Use the available rule set to diagnose the problem.
b) Assume you would like to know the list of symptoms that would result in a conclusion of "Engine is flooded".

4- Consider the example of the expert system for car diagnosis mentioned above.  Write a program for CLIPS software containing the rules for this problem as well as the following facts "Headlights dim or dead", "Ignition key is on", and "Engine is not turning over".   Run the program and check if it will result in the same conclusion as part (a) of problem 3.  Print out your program.

HW 1: due date is 10-11-99
Consider Class Note 2:
a) Explain how you can use Excel to extract a list of customers who live in Upland (sorted by their last name) from original data (only ID, last name, and first name).
b) Repeat the steps (example 1) performed in class using Access.  You can refer to the updated Class Note 2.  Print the table  created initially and at the end (just for the first four rows), the created form, and a report designed as you like.

Consider Class Note 3:
a) repeat the steps performed in class using Access.  Print tables, forms, and two reports with different designs for customers and contracts.
b) Design a report for two of the Queries performed in class and print them.
c) Write a question that involves joining two tables and using two fields of each tables.  Perform a query. Design a report and print it.

 Optional Portfolio
For 5 points extra credit
Due date: At the time of midterm and final exams

The main purpose of the portfolio is to obtain the student's feedback on his/her learning process in order to improve this course.  You may collect and organize all (both graded and not graded) your homework  in a three-ring binder.  At the same time, you should comment on each one of the collected items.  Comments and analysis that demonstrate critical thinking of the student will receive extra credit points.  The portfolio will be collected and graded at the time of the midterm and final exams.

Order for the portfolio contents:
