The Local History of Sigma Phi Epsilon - California Mu

California Mu Chapter:

The California Mu Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon dawned as a colony at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly) on January 1979. Professor Paul Wisend, a SigEp Alumnus, spoke highly of his Fraternal experience that Dennis "Duck" Chin, a student in Professor Wisend's HRT class, was motivated to establish a chapter.

Dennis and Professor Wisend met with school officials to discuss reasons why Cal Poly needed a national Fraternity, especially Sigma Phi Epsilon. With faculty approval, Brother Dennis submitted a history of Cal Poly, Pomona to the National Headquarters of Sigma Phi Epsilon in Richmond, VA.

Through the work and vision of Brother Dennis, and the ambition of Professor Wisend, the California Mu Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon was installed on April 26, 1980. The installing chapters were California Beta, from USC, and Arizona Alpha, from Arizona State University. Cal Poly was graced with its first national Fraternity.

In 1996, California Mu took the initiative and changed from the traditional "pledging" and implemented the Balanced Man Program to differentiate itself from the typical "Frat Boy" stereotypes.

California Mu recently won the Iron Man Award for intramural sports and Greek Week. The Inter-Fraternity Council at Cal Poly, Pomona also awarded California Mu with the Chapter Excellence Award for its excellence in recruitment, sportsmanship and support of other chapters on campus
