Hi!
I'm getting to be an old man, but I'm having a lot of fun.
I work hard and believe in giving all that I have to teaching.
I've been a lot of places and lived a pretty full life. Sometimes
teaching is humiliating, since students know as much or more
than I do. I'm a humble person, and try never to put anybody
down. But I have high expectations that students will want
to learn.
One of my strongest values
is that of "authenticity". It means to me being "up front",
even when it hurts. I don't like being in a power-position,
and I don't like "playing games". I have a great deal of faith
in people generally, and want to trust. I want to see my students
as co-learners, and unless I can create the circumstances
for this to happen, I'm often unsatisfied with 'teaching'.
So help me! Set goals,
ask questions, be "up front", and don't worry! If you're moving
forward, a candid person, and don't play games about ignoring
requirements, we'll have a super time! Overall, my teaching
evaluations are good; often at the top of the department and
university. But some people don't like my collaborative style
and would prefer highly structured lecture courses of limited
involvement. I think that I 'teach' in areas that are critically
important for your career. That I don't "teach" as much as
ask you to set and pursue goals, and provide "lecturettes"
across what I see as key learning needs of large classes..
is about the best I know how to do.
I'll do my very best
to be there for you.. and I hope you'll make a commitment
to setting goals and accomplishing learning. Correspond with
me at any time, about any thing. sciman@csupomona.edu
