About SCASLA
Mission Statement
The Mission of the SCASLA is to serve all Landscape Architecture students by facilitating education about the profession, providing a bridge between students and the professional world, and to stimulate dialogue about landscape architecture among the students.
What is the American Society of Landscape Architects?
In 1899, the American Society of Landscape Architects was founded by eleven people in New York--most of them associated with Frederick Law Olmsted, the "father" of Landscape Architecture. ASLA works to increase the public ’s awareness of and appreciation for the profession of landscape architecture. ASLA is an active advocate for the profession at the local, state and national levels on public policy issues including licensure, livable communities, surface transportation, the environment, historic preservation, small business issues, and more.

What does SCASLA do for landscape architecture students?
SCASLA officers are responsible for setting up workshops, guest lectures, organizing club events like hot dog days and bowling nights, planning the end-of-year-banquet, making announcements to classmates, and other various tasks. Most importantly, SCASLA provides an opportunity for classes of different ranks to meet, socialize, and discuss strategies for getting involved in the profession outside of class.
As members of ASLA, you get access to scholarhips for tuition, invitations to ASLA firm chapter meetings (social events with food and drinks), access to ASLA's web resources, and a subscription to Lanscape Architecture Magazine. Click here for more info.
As officers, we get certain perks for our hard work. For starters, we get funding from ASLA national to send students to LaBash every year. We also get easy access to firm social meetings and interviews. Networking is a major part of avdancing in this field (like many other careers) and SCASLA provides a source for meeting and networking with firms, oranizations, grad schools and landscape students from all over the country. Not only that, but being involved on campus outside of class helps teachers know who you are. Access to awards and scholarships is more likely if you are involved in student clubs and organizations.
What is LaBash?
LaBash is an entirely student-run conference in the Spring of every year, held at a school with a department of landscape architecture. It is part workshop, part lecture circuit, part career fair, and part celebration (not necessarily equal parts). ASLA donates money every year to help offset travel expenses for a handful of officers. It's hard to explain just how much fun LaBash really is...you just have to attend and see for yourself. For more information, watch a short movie from the past two year's trips:

LaBash'06 (6.6 mb) - University of Maryland, College Park, MD
Next year's LaBash is at University of Guelph, Canada
