This is another specimen of bacteroids prepared with freeze-etching and freeze-fracturing technologies. The spiral shaped "organelle" in one of the bacteroids is a mesosome (see inset). Mesosomes are inpocketings of the cell membrane that contain a concentration of metabolic enzymes.
