This is a conventional transmission electron micrograph of bacteroids partially enmeshed in ovarian microvilli. Specimens were prepared using the freeze-etching and freeze-fracturing technologies. Three dimensional relief is achieved by shadowing specimens at an angle with an electron opaque metal such as gold or platinum.
