POMONA - Cal Poly Pomona professor Renford Reese will soon be part of a 30-second promotional spot for Black History Month on sports network ESPN.
"I was humbled that they would feature me for something as significant as Black History Month," Reese said. "I was humbled by it. And then the other thing was ... I thought it would be great for my university, Cal Poly Pomona."
A camera crew on Tuesday filmed Reese lecturing to a class at Cal Poly.
"I think one of my main motivations is to put this university in the public eye," Reese said.
ESPN has selected 13 people associated with colleges whose work benefits black Americans, a company spokesman said.
The name of the series is "Realizing The Dream."
A 30-second spot featuring Reese will run during college basketball games on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU.
The series will run in February and March. Reese's spot will probably run in early March, the spokesman said.
Reese, 42, is a political-science professor and director of the Colorful Flags program at Cal Poly Pomona. He is the author of the 2008 book "American Bravado" and the 2004 book "American Paradox: Young Black Men," among others.
Reese just finished a Fulbright fellowship lecturing at the University of Hong Kong.
