[Part 1] [Part 2]

August 5: Guitar Lake to Mt. Whitney and Trail Camp

Our morning view of the west side of Whitney. That is where we are hiking today. UP!!

Awesome views of the Hitchcock Lakes while hiking up Whitney.

Another view facing south. This trail was beautiful, but tough. We had three miles to go from 10,600 to 13,500 ft. We were each carrying about a gallon of water as well.

Hooray! We get to drop our packs at Trail Crest and head another 2 miles toward the summit of Mt. Whitney.

Mt. Whitney in the distance. The trail winds thru rocks for two miles.

The last uphill push for the summit

Kent and jvz were ahead of the group and arrive an hour before the rest of us. Here they are heading down. They hiked all the way out that day. You can see the hut on top.

One of the many benchmarks on top of Mt. Whitney

Phil on top of Mt. Whitney...highest point in the continental U. S. (14, 497 ft). The White Mountains in the background.

Miss Mozark and Mozark. The drop at the right is many thousands of feet.

One of the may spectacular views from the summit. We could see for hundreds of miles in all directions.

Another view of the valley floor

The highest toilet in the continental U.S.

(L to R): Phil, I-am-OM, Mozark, Miss Mozark, The Naviguesser

Phil also ran into some of his friends from the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association.

As we begin the trip back, here is another view of the Hitchcock Lakes on the left and Guitar Lake on the right.

A look up at Mt. Whitney while hiking down to Trail Camp

August 6: Trail Camp to Whitney Portal

Phil at Mirror Lake

Phil, I-am-OM, The Naviguesser, Miss Mozark, and Mozark at the end of the trial. Hooray! We made it!

This is what happens when you leave visible food in your car at some of the trailheads. Someone left food visible in their car and a bear ripped the window frame out on both sides to get to the food inside. Our cars were OK.

Now-empty bags of food were on the front seat
