Attached are some photos from a a trip my winter survival class went on,
last February. We snowshoed in 2 miles to a hot spring that has several
old bathtubs for soaking, and nearby we made snow shelters. After I
made my snow shelter and had dinner, I was sitting in a steaming bathtub
under a moonless sky with 10 zillion stars, with a mountain stream 20
feet away, I was thinking it just doesn't get any better than this.

with Tuckie. Shrimp creole sauce over rice. She fell for it. Rampart
Ridge, Snoqualmie Pass area, Washington Cascades. 1987

near Chinook Pass, Washington Cascades. 1989

Below: Glacier with crevasses was sunrise on Mt. Ranier, '75

Below: The gang on my first trip to the North
Cascades, a route called the Ptarmigan Traverse. The route for the day
went below the black cliffs on the right, and up the glacier above the
hiker with the yellow helmet. The crevasses were 50 across, and 200
feet deep, very scary to cross. The Pass for the day was right of the
triangular peak on the right skyline. Packs were 70 lbs at least.
1973. I have done this route a total of 3 times, and would do it again
in a minute.

Below: Idaho Bob (left) and friends on the Ptarmigan
Traverse, North Cascades. Mt. Formidable is behind, typical of North
Cascades peaks. Big glaciers, loose crappy rock. We were Sierra
backpackers and Yosemite rockclimbers out of our element, and learning
about glaciers by falling into them. When the sun was out, the most
glorious scenery imaginable. Me and my partner Marc (no shirt) didn't
get along with the other 3, who we didn't know very well. 1973

Below: Tuckie on the mountaineer
shortcut into Sheep Lake in the 7 Devils, Idaho. The shortcut is 2
hours to Sheep lake, the trail around the mountain is 10 hours. We had
goats come through our camp at Sheep Lake. July 1994.
