 Merry Christmas
and
Happy New Year

from Phil's Family

Greetings again to family and friends. 2003 has been another active year around our house. The major change was Julia being on her own for a year now. We took a lot of trips within the family...but not together!

Phil is still teaching at Cal Poly Pomona. It was a year of reunions for Phil. First, he helped organize his high school 35 year reunion in April. It was great. Then in May he and his father, Harry, attended a reunion of his Uncle David's WWII Parachute Infantry Regiment in Wisconsin. It was a thrill to meet the veterans who served with Dave in Sicily, Italy, and Holland. Finally, in November he attended a Sigma Chi, Zeta Theta Chapter reunion in Flint, Michigan.

In June he went to Nashville to present a paper at American Society for Engineering Education Conference and had another reunion with old friends from his General Motors days. He also got to visit his friend, Wayne, who lives near Knoxville. Phil and Wayne hiked to the top of Mt. LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. He also got to meet some of his friends from an internet backpacking website on his trips to Nashville and Michigan.

Phil received an Engineering Educator award in January (see photo at right), but a big surprise was meeting Chuck Yeager and talking to him for about 10 minutes.

He did get to spend a week backpacking in the Sierras with TrailTalk friends completing a loop hike out of Mineral King. It was the most scenic trip yet!!!

Phil is still on the board of Eastside Christian Schools and is excited about the new campus that opened this Fall. He enjoyed his seventh year of wilderness trail patrols with the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association.

Judy continues to work as a part-time pharmacist at both Longs and Boeing. This year she managed a number of get-away trips again to Portland and Florida to visit her family. Her sister, Linda, was also able to visit us. Judy continues with her needlework class and has done some amazing stuff. She also continues to support the children's church ministry. Unfortunately she was plagued all year with foot trouble...still trying to figure out exactly what is wrong. Judy finally got to see Phantom of the Opera at the Music Center in Los Angeles...oh, yes, she took Phil with her.

David (26) is now working at multiple jobs. His main job is at Sport Chalet in the Mountain Shop. He really enjoys it and it will help support his snowboarding habit. This year he got into digital photography and has done a lot of nice stuff. He made trips to the Mojave Desert, Arizona and Texas for some gatherings with friends from some internet sites and had great times. David and Michelle still hang out together, but mostly as friends these days. They seem to have a lot of common interests. David and Phil went to the Edwards Air Show in November and got some great pictures. David still maintains his on-line store which brings in a little extra each month.
Julia (24) had an exciting first year on her own after graduating from Cal Poly Pomona and moving out. She and her roommate, Merrill, share an apartment and are doing well. Julia passed her state insurance license exam and also became a Notary Public. She continues to work as Director of Marketing for Capital Asset Services in Brea, CA. Julia is still seriously dating Matt. Matt has had a good year as well working very hard in electronics and software design and helping on his father's property. Julia got to take a few cruises during the year at various places on the Pacific Coast of North America. I think she is going to take more cruises in the future.

Sarah (21) is in her last year at Cal Poly Pomona majoring in Hotel and Restaurant Management. She really enjoys the culinary side of the hospitality industry which has translated into a lot of good eating when she experiments at home. Last Spring Quarter at Cal Poly Pomona she worked in the Restaurant at the Collins Center. It was a great experience and she enjoyed it. She continues to work part-time at TGIFridays and still sees her boyfriend, Adam, almost every day. They enjoy music, cooking, pets, and watching movies.

Sarah's big adventure this year was a three-week trip to Italy with some friends. Her friend, Valaria, is from Italy and attended UCI for one year. Valaria hosted them for three weeks and showed them around Northern Italy. When they visited the Vatican they did not have any plans. However, they got lucky and got to see the Pope from about 10 feet away.

Debi (17) is in her second year in the special day program at El Dorado High School and likes it very much. This year her elective is dance. On Wednesdays she bowls in a league for young adults with special needs. She really hates gutter balls. Debi turned 17 in August and we celebrated with another party at one of the local bowling alleys. Debi invited many of her long-time friends. Debi and Phil also spent a lot of time at Disneyland (Debi's Disneyland Page) and Disneys California Adventure (Debi's DCA Page). Debi really likes the fast rides like California Screaming and Big Thunder Mountain.
