Field trips can be valuable learning experiences for many courses. However, they can also present risks and hazards, some of which may be unacceptable.
Faculty members who are planning to conduct field trips should perform their own risk analysis, at the |
same time determining if the field trip lends itself toward achieving the learning objectives of the course. If the field trip isn't essential toward achieving the learning objectives of the course, then perhaps the field trip isn't necessary to undertake.
Should you have any questions, please contact University Risk Management at (909) 869-4846.
Field Trip Guidelines
What you need to know and consider before scheduling a field trip:
- Is a field trip the best alternative for achieving course learning objectives?
- To be a University-covered field trip, it needs to be a course requirement.
- No guests are permitted to accompany students on the field trip.
- Consider Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) issues, reasonable and foreseeable accommodation, as well as extra safety precautions that may be necessary.
- Faculty are strongly advised to begin and end all field trips at the field trip site.
|
 |
- Training in the use of any necessary safety equipment must be provided to participants before departure.
- Identify reasonably foreseeable hazards and notify the participants in writing.
- Know in advance who you are going to call for help while on a field trip.
- Have at least one other participant carry emergency numbers and be certain they know what to do in an emergency.
- Refer media questions to the Cal Poly Pomona Public Affairs Office at (909) 869-3342.
