Welcome to Dr. Dick Johnson's home page. In the History Department I teach most of the chronological American history courses that occur before 1890. Other courses I teach include HST 409 War and American Society and HST 413 Religion in America.

Teaching and learning are my first loves. The General Education courses I teach, especially HST 201 and HST 202, are especially important because they involve ways of thinking and understanding that are vital to every college graduate. In my upper division courses I often insert new learning experiences, such as the Chautauqua experience, in which students offer a first hand interpretation of a historical figure to other class members.

By clicking on the link, "Professional Interests," you can trace my own experience as a Chautauqua scholar interpreting such key historical figures as Abraham Lincoln, Alexis de Tocqueville, John James Audubon, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and John Dos Passos.
