In June, 1962, he finished as a Distinguished Graduate and began pilot training at Williams Air Force Base in Arizona, finishing a year later at the top of his class.
Having competed successfully for a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship, Dr. Davey was able to begin his graduate education at the California Institute of Technology while serving in the Air Force. After receiving his Masters degree in aeronautics, he resumed his flying duties as an instructor pilot in T-37 aircraft.
Dr. Davey left the Air Force in 1968 to continue his education at Caltech, having been awarded a second NSF Fellowship. In 1971, he received his doctorate in aeronautics. His thesis research dealt with the stability of fluid flows.
Starting at TRW in Redondo Beach, Dr. Davey began a ten-year career with industry. His work included the development of software for trajectory analysis and the development of meteorological sensors for the Viking Mars lander and the Pioneer Venus entry probe. Later, he managed programs that investigated the effects of high-altitude clouds on reentry vehicles and directed the development of several meteorological-instrumentation products. At the Barton Instruments Division of ITT, he managed the development of flow-measuring instruments used in oil fields. While at Barton, he studied business at Pepperdine University, receiving an MBA in 1981.
That same year, Dr. Davey joined the faculty of the California State Polytechnic University at Pomona where he continues to teach in the Aerospace Engineering Department. His subjects include aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, propulsion and control systems. Dr. Davey was named a Distinguished Teacher in 1984 and has received four Meritorious Performance Awards.
In 1995, Dr. Davey was elected to the city council of Duarte. He was named Mayor in 1998.
Dr. Davey and his wife Julie have been married for 37 years. They enjoy hiking in National Parks and traveling in their single-engined light plane.
