IRB | Office of ResearchAll research conducted on the Cal Poly Pomona campus that involves human subjects to any extent, or is conducted by a Cal Poly Pomona employee as part of the work scope of their position, must be reviewed by the Cal Poly Pomona IRB. Potential applicants should first download the application form, which contains directions on how to apply. The Cal Poly Pomona IRB is constituted in accord with Federal Policy. Our IRB membership consists of scientists and non-scientists, a physician, and a bioethicist. The Compliance Associate serves as the Human Protections Administrator of the IRB, and the IRB is administratively housed in the Research office. The expertise of the IRB membership is reflective of the type of applications submitted to the IRB. The IRB meets about once each month during the fall, winter, and spring quarters, and as needed during the summer quarter.
There is relatively rapid turn around for applications judged to be "exempt" from Federal Policy review (typically anonymous surveys or the use of anonymous data or samples - however, there can be many definitions of "anonymous," with the IRB making the final decision). All non-exempt applications will undergo expedited or full committee review. Applications that pose minimal risk are typically reviewed by the expedited method, with minor revisions being negotiated between the investigator(s) and the IRB reviewers. Other applications, e.g. clinical trials, using vulnerable subjects, receive more intensive, possibly full review.
