ANNOUNCEMENTS

(August 22, 2012) - eRASQ is live!  If you have trouble, please let the ACUC know.

(August 20, 2012) - eRASQ is about to be released.  The paper format of the risk assessment screening questionnaire will be replaced by an on-line mechanism. This should prove to be faster and more efficient for the ACUC, EH&S, and those special circumstances when needing to see a physician to evaluate one's exposure to animals in the course of research and teaching. The paper HHQ will not go on-line since it is a confidential document containing personal health information.

(October 19, 2011) - The Graduate Studies Office has announced a revision to its "Research Certification Form."  It has incorporated information about the potential for graduate research study with vertebrate animals.  It is available at the grad studies website.

(October 19, 2011) - The new "Guide," the 8th version of this document for animal care and use, is adopted by AAALAC.  Being an accredited institution through AAALAC, it will be the campus's standard as well.


Federal regulations require the use of an ACUC at any institution that uses animals as per the USDA definition or has vertebrate species research supported by the PHS. The tasks of an ACUC include reviewing all protocols involving the use of animals by an employee of that institution as part of his/her official duties. The meaning of “use of animals” is not limited to usage on campus, but also includes field studies. A unique feature of this institution, compared to other CSUs, is that we are accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of LaboratorAAALAC logoy Animal Care, International (AAALAC) and have been since 1997. This is the highest standard of accreditation that can be achieved by an institution using laboratory animals. The NIH, in its current policies, accepts AAALAC accreditation as the best means of demonstrating conformance with NIH requirements for animal care and use. The ACUC is responsible for helping to maintain the high standards that AAALAC demands of its accredited institutions.

Training for teaching and research with animals

Competency after training is a combination of knowledge and technique.  The Cal Poly Pomona ACUC adopted the CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) on-line program to provide a consistent high-quality format for information about using animals in research and teaching.  The nearly 100 modules have been grouped for various purposes (ACUC member, basic "101" training, specialty activities such as surgery or non-traditional species, and animal worker). Here is a list of the modules.  Click on the link below to register through Cal Poly (it's free!), and select and do the animal coursework (there are also courses in human studies and responsible conduct of research which you may take). Each module should take ~15 minutes to read, study, and pass the quiz; they can be done at various times.  When all modules in the group are completed, a transcript will be generated and sent electronically to the ACUC office.  Keep note of it for yourself to include in the training section of the animal study protocol.  This program was introduced in 2010 and became mandatory for protocol approval in 2011.
