Identity

UNIVERSITY LOGO AND LOGOTYPE

The logo is the official university symbol and should appear on all university communications. The logotype is a custom typeset form of the Cal Poly Pomona name. The lettering in the logotype should never be reset. The size and spacing relationships between the logotype and the logo have been carefully considered and should not be altered in any way. No substitute typefaces may be used.

Logos for colleges, divisions, departments, institutes, publications, conferences, or any other university organization or activity should not replace the university logo, as this will detract from the university identity.

Recognized auxiliaries or organizations affiliated with the university, such as the Cal Poly Pomona Alumni Association, Associated Students Inc., Cal Poly Pomona University Educational Trust and Cal Poly Pomona Foundation should not use the official university logo; however, it is appropriate and desirable for them to incorporate other university graphic elements, such as the logotype bar, if possible, to further connect them to Cal Poly Pomona.

Although the logo may be used without the logotype, they should be used together whenever possible. There are two acceptable positions of the logotype relative to the logo. The alternative version is an option when dealing with horizontal formats.

Always use official logo and logotype art. Never attempt to re-draw or re-create the logo.

The university logotype can also be used alone when a larger application of the university name is needed.

The Meaning of the Logo

The Cal Poly Pomona logo is a unique and memorable union of architecture and landscape. The large image was created from two on-campus structures, the CLA Building and the arch from the historic Arabian Horse Stables. This collaboration suggests a transition or progression into a new age of innovation, a linking of the theoretical and the practical. The two white lines inside the building structure visually encourage this transition.

The leaf is not only an acknowledgement of the past tree logo but a representation of the university's lush and unique campus. It also represents the student as an individual flourishing within the nurturing environment of a greenhouse, Cal Poly Pomona. The placement and shape of the leaf in relation to the building structure creates an implied "P." This represents the fact that Cal Poly Pomona is a polytechnic university and is located in the city of Pomona.

Logo Positioning

It is essential that the Cal Poly Pomona logo and logotype be visible at all times. This will be achieved by selecting a visual image area that will not compete with or obscure the name. Never place the logo on a highly textured or patterned background. The logo alone has the flexibility to move around on a page; however, the logo and logotype together should only be placed on the left side of a page and never in the center or on the right side.

When applying the logo or logotype within a circle, visually center the logo and logotype as shown below. When a large circular area is the format, place the logo and logotype in the upper left margin of the format.

Logo Clear Zone

A clear zone of .5x (or half the height of the logo) must be maintained as shown below. No text or graphic elements can appear in this clear zone. This white space and separation from other elements is critical to maintaining the figure/ground relationship of the form and to ensuring a strong visual impact. When surrounding graphic elements visually compete with the logo, clarity and impact is reduced.

Logo Color/Contrast

The logo and logotype can appear in green PMS 349, the equivalent four color process or Web screen values. If these colors are not available, the logo and logotype should appear in black or  knocked out/white . The logo cannot be screened.  The logo can also be reproduced in gold foil in special circumstances. For guidelines, check with Graphic Communications Services.

When printing the logo at a small size, use extra care to prevent the lines in the leaf and building from filling in. Keep ink spread to a minimum.
