Soccer Head Coach Paul Caligiuri
Will Visit USAF Bases on International Tour
Paul Caligiuri,
first-year head coach of the Cal Poly Pomona men's and women's soccer
teams, will travel overseas later this month on a goodwill military
tour.
Caligiuri, a
former Los Angeles Galaxy and national team star, will visit United
States Air Force bases in London, Germany, Turkey and Norway as
part of the Extreme Summer 2002 tour July 28 through Aug. 9. Caligiuri
will conduct clinics for kids on military bases and teach the finer
points of soccer. He will also sign autographs and conduct handshake
tours at remote base locations.
The tour will
include stops at Incirlik, Turkey; Rhein-Main, Germany; Spangdalem,
Germany; Kaiserlautern Military Community, Germany; RAF Fairford,
England; RAF Lakenheath, England; and Stavanger, Norway.
"I think
it will be the most unique trip I've ever taken," Caligiuri
said. "It's especially significant in times like these."
This year's
tour is the fourth of the celebrity and sports-themed Extreme Summers.
Previous tours featured television stars like Nicholas Brendon ("Buffy
the Vampire Slayer") and Beverley Mitchell ("Seventh Heaven")
as well as NFL running backs Jamal Anderson and Ricky Williams.
This year's schedule has also featured film and television star
Joely Fisher ("Baby Bob," "Inspector Gadget").
The Extreme Summers program is geared towards motivating and providing
the military communities with entertainment and positive activities
throughout the summer.
"It is
a great honor for me to be involved with Extreme Summer and to visit
the U.S. Air Force bases," Caligiuri said. "During a time
of need, I think it is a great opportunity to reach out to the kids
throughout the world, especially American kids based in foreign
countries. I look forward to kicking it up and having a good time."
Caligiuri recently
served as an expert commentator during ESPN2's coverage of the World
Cup on "World Cup 2Night."
Caligiuri joined
Cal Poly Pomona in 2001 shortly after retiring from the Galaxy.
He takes over a women's program that finished 16-4-2 and advanced
to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Broncos
concluded last season ranked ninth in the country. The men's team
was 3-15-1 a year ago.
The Cal Poly
Pomona women open the 2002 season on Aug. 30 at home against Fresno
Pacific at 1 p.m. The Bronco men start on Aug. 31 at Pt. Loma Nazarene
in San Diego.
