Through practice we can test new ideas and concepts in actual conditions while enriching teaching. My practice emphasizes the design of low energy, low carbon buildings with a reduced environmental impact. More than one billion human beings still lack adequate shelter and are living in unacceptable conditions of poverty. I believe that everybody has a right to decent shelter, and I have a special interest in proposing solutions for them in developed and less developed countries. Through my teaching and the work of my students we have a chance to develop and test ideas that can do this. As director of sustainable design at HMC Architects I also have the opportunity to integrate research and practice in high-performance architecture and have worked in numerous projects in the areas of healthcare and education.
