Mary Pennington



Mary Engle Pennington was born in in Nashville, Tennesse 1872 and died in 1952. She received her Ph.D. in chemistry at the age of 22. Her research on bacteria led to standards and practices for milk safety. She headed the U.S. Department of Agriculture and developed refrigeration methods that became adopted universally in both the food industry and railroad refrigerator cars. US chemist who set standards for food refrigeration. She also designed both industrial and household refrigerators spending many years as a refrigeration engineer and consultant.
