Florence Lawrence was a a silent film actress who was also the inventor of several devices for cars. Lawrence's mother was Charlotte Bridgwood, president of the Bridgwood Manufacturing Company was also an invetor. Bridgewood is credited with the invention of the first automatic windshield wiper Through her own love of cars Florence Lawrence came to invent many of the features that are now standaard fixtures in the modern automobile. In 1913 she invented a signaling arm that wasmounted on the back fender. The arm could be raised and lowered by an electric button on the dashboard. It indicated to other drivers behind the car which way the driver intended to turn. Florence Lawrence also invented device that would indicate when a vehicle was about to stop. Her invention consisted of a flag on the back of the car that would rise whenever the driver pressed down on the brakes. In her own time, however, neither of Florence Lawrence's inventions caught on.
