Rebecca Webb Carranza
Rebecca Webb Carranza is recognized as the inventor of the tortilla chip. In the 1940'she and her husband, Mario, owned a Mexican delicatessen and delicatessen and factory, the El Zarape Tortilla Factory, in Los Angeles. According to family members, Carranza decided one day to cut up torillas into triangles and fry and salt them to avoid throwing them away. She named her invention "Tort Chips" and they soon became a popular snack. |
