COURSE OUTCOMES



Course Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course students will be expected to:

identify the principle religions of Asia;
be familiar with the fundamental teachings and key terms of each of these religions;
identify the sociocultural implications of each of these religions;
identify the possible impact of religious diversity in contemporary American society.
articulate possible mediatory strategies for co-existence in the world of pluralistic values.


Expectations

Summations/Reports of Readings

Teams of students will submit summations in the form of reports of the assigned readings. The reports shall consist of the following:
  • identification of the key points of the assigned reading
  • a summation of the general ideas, theories or positions
  • a personal reflection of the above ideas, theories or positions
The reports should be written using Microsoft Word and downloaded into an assigned terminal in the CEIS lab.


Field Experience

Students will be required to visit an Asian religious center of their choice and to submit a fully developed report of this visit. A Directory of religious centers may be found at the California Directory of Religious Centers.
The report shall include descriptions of:
  • the background and history of the center
  • the goals of the center in terms of its religious and civic commitments
  • the religious practises, rites and rituals of the center
  • the architectural features, symbols and icons of the center
  • the lives and activities of the religious leaders, priests, monks etc.,
  • the lives and activities of the lay members of the center

This report is due the sixth week of the quarter. The report shall be written using Microsoft word and may include photos. The report should be downloaded into the folder marked "Field Experience" in the designated terminal in the CEIS lab.


First Team Presentation

Each team may select to do their first presentation on the religions we will be studying in this class. Presentations must be done with Power Point. Each of the religions must be presenbted giving the background, history, tenets and associated cultural practises.


Final Presentation

Teams may choose any religion or aspect of a particular religion upon which to base their final presentation. For example, a team may wish to research and devlop a presentation on Taoism and medical practises, or a presentation on wedding ceremonies of different Asin religions. Final presentations must be done with Power Point .
