SELECTIONS FROM TATTVARTHA SUTRA

Causes for the Influx of Certain Karmas

The influx of pleasant feeling-producing karma is caused by feelings of compassion for all living beings, appreciation of votaries (those with vows), charity, self-control affecting the welfare of living beings, involuntary shedding of karmic particles, good conduct without proper knowledge, equanimity and nonpossessiveness.

Stopping and Shedding Karma

Stopping of karma involves the absence of in-coming karmic particles. Karma can be stopped by:
  • self restraint;
  • conscientiousness;
  • virtue;
  • contemplation;
  • endurance of suffering, and
  • proper conduct.

Karma can be shed and stopped with self-restraint. Self-restraint is rational curbing of the activities of body, speech and mind.

Conscientiousness requires proper care in:

  • walking;
  • speaking;
  • eating;
  • accepting and placing objects, and
  • disposing waste products.
