Excercise 4
1. Look up the distinctions between allopathic and
holistic/empirist healing.
Try and determine if the tradition of healing and medicine as practiced historically by women
has been allopathic or holistic?
2. The following site summarizes the periods in history and women's role
in medicine and healing. From your assigned reading of Stanley's book, fill
in some names and contributions by women for each historical era.

3. How has modern medicine been an example of the "takeover" theory? How has
modern medicine, the pharmacological industry and technology
gender hierarchies of preference in medicine and healing?
4. Select and develop three topics involving the uses of technologies relating to women's health and well being.
Examples: Plastic surgery; HRT, C Sections etc.
