Course Goals

The goal of this course is to examine the work of women artists so as to understand the impact of social and cultural circumstances on the production of art by both women and men. Specifically, students will be asked not only to examine how social, political and economic factors are reflected in the artistic creations of women, but to identify the assymetrical ways in which women's cultural productions have been viewed historically.

The close readings of both the assigned texts and art works by women artists will form the ground for exploring the intersections between gender, ethnicity, class and artistic expression.
