Events and Activities

Evening with Industry (EWI)
A networking dinner held each year designed to connect HR professionals in the local area with students on campus, (especially ones graduating soon).  This event is organized by the EWI committee, formed from PIHRA members, and will take place April 20, 2006 so mark your calendars now!  This is a major event where dozens of professionals are invited to meet with students and listen to a guest speaker or panel.  This event also acts as a fundraising opportunity by companies providing sponsorships.

HR Games
HR Games are designed to help participants study for the PHR exam.  Colleges all over the country compete in a jeopardy-styled game.  If a team ranks high enough in the state competition, they move on to the regional level and the top teams there move on to the national competition which is usually held at the SHRM National Conference.  In addition to significantly expanding one’s knowledge of HR, this event involves a great deal of excitement and entertainment. The games will be hosted by Cal Poly Pomona this year on February 24 and 25, 2006. This is a great opportunity for you to get involved, meet many important HR professionals and fellow HR students from other schools.

Merit Award
As an official SHRM chapter, CPP PIHRA assembles a book at the end of the year that contains documentation of all the activities completed and participated in throughout the year.  Each activity is delegated a certain amount of points and awards are given according to the number of points achieved.  This project is put together and submitted by the end of March each year.  Last year we placed 11th out of over 900 submissions!  This year we plan to be top 10.

Executive Mentorship Program
The Executive Mentor Program is a formal program that allows students to establish more personal business relationships with industry professionals. A student and professional are matched based on their similar interests and schedules so the two can meet and share insights about the business world. Face-to-face meetings would be a minimum of once per quarter, typically in the setting of a business lunch or dinner, and other regular communication would be done over the phone and through email. More details for an official introduction event are soon to come.

Luncheons
Every third Tuesday of each month, District 15 of PIHRA Central hosts a luncheon at Pomona Mining Company located on the hill just off the 10 freeway by Cal Poly Pomona.  This is a primary networking opportunity for students who wish to meet HR professionals.  There will be a guest speaker and a buffet lunch.  See the benefits section of this packet to see for costs, (changes according to the level of membership).

Guest Speakers
Through PIHRA Central and other associates, we invite HR professionals to speak at our general meetings.  The topics will vary from week to week covering all sorts of topics from training to sexual harassment, business etiquette to laws and legislation.  Each speaker has practical experience in the field and sometimes even has job openings available for internships or part/full time positions in their company.
We also have recruiters come to our general meetings to speak and allow them to present job opportunities within their company.

Workshops
Several workshops are held each year.  The workshops deal with topics such as: business etiquette, resume writing, networking, proper dress, and interviewing techniques.

Socials
Whenever possible, we have socials to take a break from our busy school activities.  Many times we combine socials with other activities such as community service, park cleanups or TV taping fundraisers.  In the past, we have even gone snowboarding with free lift tickets.

Community Service
Throughout the year, CPP PIHRA engages in community service activities such as park cleanups, AIDS Walk, and various other events.  This provides another opportunity to connect with other members while contributing to the community and earning more points for the merit award and merit status.

Fundraisers

Throughout the year, CPP PIHRA does fundraisers to raise money to continue carrying out activities.  We do activities like Krispy Kreme card sales and TV tapings.
