Background of PIHRA and SHRM
The Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) is a professional organization for Human Resources professionals. It began in 1948 when 28 individuals anticipated the need for a national organization representing the personnel function. At the time, it was known as American Society for Personnel Administration (ASPA) and has grown to represent almost 200,000 individuals, with 500 chapters in the United States having members in more than 100 countries.
SHRM’s largest affiliate chapter covering Southern California is the Professionals in Human Resources Association (PIHRA). PIHRA began in 1944, and became a SHRM affiliate in 1964. It is a non-profit organization run by volunteers. Its membership and geographic reach is so large, PIHRA is actually broken up into 19 separate districts, and supports numerous student chapters. It has almost 5,000 members, representing over 3,000 companies.
Together these organizations promote the field of Human Resources, by offering workshops, seminars, professional certification, legislative involvement, and a myriad of other activities and resources that lead to the development of HR professionals and the HR profession.
