Multi-scale Modelling for Threshold Dependent Cellular Differentiation
Anna Cai
Department of Mathematics, University of California, Irvine
The maintenance of a stable stem cell population in the epidermis is important for the constant regeneration of the stratified epithelium. The population size is regulated by cell secreted diffusible extra-cellular signalling molecules as well as intra-cellular molecules. A mathematical model incorporating both levels of regulation is used to examine the balance between growth and differentiation for the stem cell population. The dynamics of the known differentiation regulator, c-Myc, and its effect on regulating a stable stem cell population is examined.
