Structure of lithium: What we looked for,
what we found, what we discovered en route,
and what we discovered looking back

Atomic lithium has become a very popular model for atomic structure calculations in recent years. In some cases, the model calculations converge with uncertainties smaller than those in existing experimental data. Attempts to improve these measurements using two-photon laser spectroscopic techniques have been successful in determining energy levels, hyperfine interactions, and isotope shifts. These experiments have also proven to be a good example of real science at work - with starts, restarts, attempts to salvage data, salvation of months of data, abandonment of months of data, and salvaging of data three years later.
