1) Attendance and participation are expected of you.
Attendance implies not just showing up for class but doing so promptly--and
staying. I will take attendance at the beginning of each class; after
you miss two class sessions, you will start losing points from your
attendance grade. In case of an emergency, contact the professor and
provide evidence of your absence. Participation involves listening to
what others have to say; taking notes and paying attention; sharing
your insights with others in a constructive manner; and pulling your
weight in group discussions. The evaluation of your participation will
be based on peer and self-evaluations, in addition to the professor's
observations in class. Finally, participation involves finishing the
assignments and turning them in for assessment on the day they are due.
I will absolutely not accept late work!
2) Multiple choice and true-false quizzes will test your command
of the material covered in the text book. These quizzes will be available
for yoy to take online at your convenience, but by a given deadline
date. They will be timed, which means that only the answers submitted
within the allotted time frame will be acceptable for assessment. The
lowest quizz grade will be dropped.
3) Journal assignments will record your reactions to the readings
in Hollitz. You will need to write a journal response to each chapter
in the book as specified on the course site. These entries need to include
your name, the date, and title of the chapter you are writing on. Each
entry requires a separate page, either typed or handwritten (as long
as legible). Collect your entries, in chronological order, in a folder
that has pockets. Clearly indicate your name student ID number on the
folder. Bring all your entires to class; I will collect them periodically
for assessment.
4) Essay assignment on a book selected from the l;ist provided
by the professor will require you to critically analyze a book in its
historical context. You need to consult at least three outside sources
to evaluate the accuracy and historical relevance of the book. These
outside resources must include relevant material from the text and Hollitz's
book (count as one source); a website; and a scholarly article on the
relevant time period. The paper needs to typed, double-spaced, and 6-8
pages in length. I will not read pages exceeding this limit!
As part of the assessment for this assignment, you are required to turn
in a one-page, typed paper proposal. Thsi proposal needs to identify
the book you will review and the supporting resources for your review,
as well as a brief discussion of why you chose this particular book.
5) The midterm and final examinations will test your general
understanding all course materials. These examinations will consist
of an essay and short-answer questions. eb, approximately one week prior
to the examination date. For each exam, you need a large blue book which
you need to turn in to me at the end of the class period prior to the
examination date. No Make-ups except under extenuating circumstances,
with prior approval from the instructor.
6) You will have an opportunity for some extra credit assignments
during the quarter. These assignments will be posted in the "Extra
Credit Assignment" area of WebCT, and they need to be completed
by the due date and submitted eletronically for assessment.
