Welcome to my home page! I have been teaching
American history at Cal Poly Pomona since 1997. My classes include
the survey course since Reconstruction, and upper division courses
in American Indian history, American women's history, and the history
of the American West. All of my courses reflect my strong interest
in the experiences of the common wo/man--experiences that make us
what we are today.
Since history is very much about interpretation,
it is important that you know a few facts about me. Born and
raised in Finland, I attended Finnish public schools and received
my first MA from the University of Jyväskylä in 1987.
I majored in English with minors in Italian, art history, adult
education and archaeology. Today, my teaching reflects this interdisciplinary
background. My advisor Dr. Michael Coleman--an Irishman married
to a Finn and with a doctorate in American Indian history--sparked
in me an interest in Native American history, and I decided to
continue my studies in the United States. I received my Master's
degree in American history from Utah State University under the
direction of Dr. Clyde A. Milner in 1990, and a doctorate from
Arizona State University under the direction of Dr. Peter Iverson
in 1995.
My research focuses on twentieth century
Native America, specifically the lives of women. I am presently
working on a book manuscript entitled Creating Community:
Native American Women in Phoenix, Arizona 1965-1980. My publications
include chapters in books, journal articles and book reviews.
In addition to Indian history, I am passionate about the history
of American women and American social and cultural history since
World War II.
Besides my academic pursuits, I have been involved on our campus
in a variety of ways. For four years, I codirected Reading the Past,
a grant project to provide professional development for fourth- and
fifth-grade teachers in four school districts in San Bernardino County.
Since 1999, I have edited Global Cal Poly Pomona, the journal
of the International
Center and Cal Poly Pomona Faculty. For two years, I worked at
the Faculty Center
for Professional Development, first as faculty associate and then
as interim director. I have also been active in the Lecturer
Support Program, the Women's
Faculty Association, and the Phi Beta Delta International Honor
Society. I am currently the Lcturer Representative to the California Faculty Association.
